Now we are on the topic of the third cornerstone of Stewardship Gardening, providing habitat. We discussed providing a natural food source, as well as providing naturally filtered water. If we are already feeding and “watering” wildlife, why habitat? Recall from article #3 “Why Should We Care?” that habitat loss is the number one cause for extinction. Why have we lost 73% of our animals? Their habitats have been severely destroyed. The striking number from Illinois is that only approximately 0.01% of the original prairie remains. What has replaced it? Either farmland or suburban sprawl. This is an example of why conservationists say habitat loss is the primary cause of extinction.
